The Pill—a name that is so abstract and non-specific, yet a name that we’ve all heard of before. Birth control pills are a small solution for a big concern. Through providing your body with hormones of estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy, The Pill is a highly effective but an annoying form of contraception. Not only do birth control pills have to be taken every day at the same time, but they also have numerous side effects such as weight gain, nausea, moodiness, and headaches.
With new technology being put out into the world every day by the minute, The Pill isn’t the only form of contraception women can use. There are countless birth control options for ladies in need of something that doesn’t completely mess with their bodily functions and is easier to keep up with.
Birth Control Implant
The implant is low maintenance, extremely effective method of birth control. This implant is tiny but mighty. Functioning exactly like birth control pills but without all the hard work, this small birth control implant is inserted into your arm and releases hormones into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. For up to five years, this implant is exceptionally effective, and you won’t even realize it’s there! This birth control option is also completely reversible and can be taken out at any time if you decide you want to get pregnant. Nexplanon is a popular example of this birth control method, and we offer it here at our Medical Center for Women making it one of the best Birth Control Options.
Birth Control Shot
You can also decide to get a depo shot, otherwise known as Depo-Provera. This birth control option works just like any other shot does, by injecting the hormone progestin into your bloodstream to stop your body from ovulating. This method is also a very effective one, and it’s relatively safe and quick, you have to make sure you’re on time with your shots.
Unlike The Pill, this shot does not need to be administered to you every day, but it does need to be re-injected into your body every three months. The most common way to do this is to have a medical professional give you the shot, but talk to your doctor to see if you can take home as a supply of shots to give to yourself instead.
Intrauterine Device (IUD)
This small, flexible device that can be inserted into your uterus and stay there for up to 12 years, is a highly effective form of birth control that comes in many forms and requires very low maintenance. An IUD works by preventing the fertilization of eggs in your uterus and can be done so by releasing hormones, such as levonorgestrel. While the act of a contraceptive releasing hormones may sound way too similar to birth control pills, don’t be fooled. One of the forms of an IUD releases hormones but does it only for to your uterus, not into your bloodstream like The Pill, making the side effects way more manageable.
There are plenty of Birth Control Options to choose from when deciding on which IUD to go for, as they are all safe, effective, and reversible at Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women. Our center offers several different IUD options that are the same device, just with each having their special benefits.
