Your Period is Late, But You’re Not Pregnant. Now What?

Why is Your Period Late?

Almost all women have a period tracker. Whether its an app on your phone or just making a note on your calendar, most women know when their period is about to arrive. When it’s late, it is shocking. Sometimes, a menstrual cycle may not come on time. A few days late may be normal, but if you’re running over a week late, you may be concerned. This is when it’s time to call a Female Gynecologist Center.

The first thought you may have if you miss your period is that you’re pregnant. This may not always be the case. There are several reasons why your period is late that have nothing to do with you bringing in a new child into the world.

Here are three reasons why your menstrual cycle may be late, but you’re not pregnant:

Stress

Stress can be one of the main reasons why your period is late. Excessive stress alters the production of a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, that interferes with ovulation and regular menstruation. We understand that work can be stressful and your boyfriend is annoying, but maintaining your stress is vital when it comes to having a monthly menstrual cycle.

If you’re dealing with an overwhelming situation that can induce anxiety, it’s recommended that you seek professional help. Common stresses such as schoolwork or family drama shouldn’t affect your period, so consulting with a professional can help you get the guidance you need. Once your stress is on a manageable level, it can take a few months to get your cycle back on track.

Changes in Weight

While being thick is in on Instagram, a drastic change in weight can impact your cycle. Being overweight, underweight, or just not keeping up with your regular eating habits can cause a missed period. Being overweight or underweight influences estrogen and progesterone and may even cause decreased fertility. A very high body mass index or BMI is often associated with missed periods, and weight loss can help you get back to regular.

Being underweight has its disadvantages as well in regards to your menstrual cycle. When your body lacks nutrients and fat, it can not produce hormones the way it should.  Women that suffer from anorexia often have issues keeping regular periods. Again, seeking professional help is always recommended. Visiting a Female Gynecologist Center can also assist with getting your period back on track.

Extreme Exercise

We get it, the gym is life, but it can also cause complications with your menstrual cycle. Because Thanksgiving just passed, it’s ideal that working out every day is a must, but extreme exercise can cause changes in ovulation. Don’t worry, taking a run after work or taking a Zumba class shouldn’t cause complications but strenuous exercise for hours and hours every day will lead to missed periods.

If you plan on exercising heavily for hours every day, it’s recommended to see a sports medicine doctor that can assist you in maintaining your overall health. They may suggest stretching and supplements to ensure that your body is functioning efficiently along with your menstrual cycle.
