Leep Surgery

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure, or LEEP, is a simple, low risk procedure that is performed to remove abnormal tissues of the cervix. If cervical or vaginal complications are found during a Pap smear screening, our professionals at Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women highly recommend this effective procedure. LEEP can detect cancerous or precancerous cells of the cervix and uterus, aiding in taking precautions or administering treatment as necessary. LEEP Surgery can even be used to detect and treat other conditions such as benign growths, genital warts, and diethylstilbestrol.

Our medical experts at Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women make the LEEP procedure quick and simple. The procedure is done at our center and does not require an overnight stay in a hospital. Before the process even begins, one of our knowledgeable doctors will perform a thorough examination in order to determine whether the LEEP procedure is right for you. Any questions you may have regarding the procedure will be answered in full and you will be notified of any preparation that may be needed, although, LEEP usually does not require any form of fasting.

With the use of an electric current, a heated, wire loop is utilized to remove the affected tissue that can cause complications in a woman’s genital tract. The electric current is conducted through the wire loop and carefully removes a thin layer of tissue that will then be examined by professionals. Our skilled doctors will numb the area in order to make the procedure as painless as possible. Our priority is to ensure that each patient feels comfortable and secure during the entire process.

LEEP Recovery

Recovery will vary depending on your particular situation, but generally, the recovery period after the LEEP procedure is fairly short and simple. Discharge and spotting is normal and may occur during the recovery process. You may be instructed to take pain relievers to ease any cramping or soreness and our medical professionals will advise that you refrain from sexual activity, the use of tampons, and any strenuous activity for a few weeks in order to ensure proper healing. You will also be asked to return to Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women for regular check ups and pap smears.
