Gynecologist in Kendall

Looking for a new doctor can be stressful. Not only is it a lot of work, but doctors often see us at our most vulnerable. It takes a lot of bravery to step into a new doctor’s office and trust that person with your health and well-being. However, if finding a primary doctor is hard, finding a gynecologist could be more stressful for some women. While a primary care doctor might ask you uncomfortable questions and administer a few tests, seeing a gynecologist seems more intimate due to the nature of the exams. However, here at Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women, we pride ourselves on being a gynecologist in Kendall that you can feel comfortable with and trust.

What is a Gynecologist in Kendall?

A gynecologist in Kendall is a doctor that specializes in women’s reproductive systems. This gives people the feeling that they only specialize in women’s sexual health, but there could be nothing further from the truth. In fact, women’s health encompasses a wide variety of medical fields, as women often need different dosages for medicine, have particular cancers unique to their reproductive system, and more. Specifically, all gynecologists are technically surgeons as well.

How Often Should You See a Gynecologist in Kendall?

You shouldn’t wait to see a gynecologist! All women should go to a gynecologist at least once a year, and anytime you suspect something might be off with you. The yearly visit is enough to ensure that your health is staying steady and to catch any smaller issues before they become more significant issues. As you get older, making sure you make that yearly gynecologist appointment becomes more and more important. The risks for reproductive-system associated cancers like breast cancer and cervical cancer skyrocket as you get older, and catching those cancers in their infancy can mean the difference between life and death.

You should also see a gynecologist in Kendall if you suspect something is wrong. Whether it’s a smell that seems suspicious or a lump in your breast, you shouldn’t wait if you believe that something that might be wrong. However, even if you feel healthy, you should still be going at least once a year.

What Happens During a Gynecology Appointment?

Once you’ve decided to go to a gynecologist in Kendall and made your appointment, there are a few things that will happen. First, you will be invited into an examination room to be weighed and measured. They will do other basic health tests, like taking your blood pressure, as well. Once those are finished, you will sit down with the gynecologist, who will ask you a lot of questions. One way you can prepare for your visit is to have certain information on hand about your sexual habits, menstrual cycles, and pre-existing conditions. Here are a few common questions a gynecologist in Kendall might ask you.

  • When was your last menstrual cycle?
  • Are your cycles regular?
  • Are you sexually active?
  • If so, how many partners do you have?
  • How many partners have you had in the past?
  • Do you have any STDs? If so, which ones?
  • What methods of birth control do you use?
  • And More!

Once you have that conversation with the doctor, the gynecologist will proceed with the exam. First they will examine the outside of the vulva and vaginal opening for any issues, then they will use a tool called a speculum to inspect the inner walls of the vagina and cervix for any issues. If you are sexually active, the gynecologist will take a swab of the cervix to test for cervical cancer and certain kinds of STDs. Once they are finished with this, they may perform a bimanual exam, where they place two fingers into the vagina and one over the top of the lower part of your abdomen to feel for fallopian tubes, cervix, and uterus from the outside of your body. Your gynecologist will also perform a breast cancer check, and usually teach you to do it as well. This check consists of pressing down on your breasts to check for any particular lumps, and after a certain age, a mechanical check in the doctor’s office.

If the doctor has sent away for any tests, like STD tests or a pap smear, you will likely have to come back at a later date to hear your results. However, once your tests are finished, you can go home, secure in the knowledge that you are healthy for another year!
