IUD Birth Control Methods

An IUD, or intrauterine device, are small devices made of flexible plastic that are used as long acting, reversible forms of birth control. This device prevents the fertilization of eggs in the uterus for a specified period of time, depending on the form of IUD you decide upon. Both the insertion and removal of the “T” shaped IUD is performed at Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women by our medical professionals.

At Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women, we have various IUD options for our patients to choose from. They are all safe, effective, and reversible, but offer different advantages. Below, we have listed the options we offer from shortest to longest lasting.

Paragard

This intrauterine device releases copper from its wire, which wraps around the base and helps prevent fertility by setting off an inflammatory reaction in the uterus. Paragard does not contain hormones as some types of IUD do. This device is very small, measuring in at a mere 1.26” x 1.42”. Its flexibility and size make it simple for our experts to insert and remove when requested. Once it is inserted, you shouldn’t feel it at all.

  • 99% effective in preventing pregnancy
  • Less than 1% of users contract pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Hormone free
  • Effective for up to 10 years

Skyla

Another great IUD option, Skyla is a hormone releasing intrauterine device that can prevent pregnancy for up to three years. It is one of the smallest devices, with a height of 1.18”, about the same height as an ear bud. Skyla releases a low dose of progestin, a hormone that is estrogen-free and will ensure that the device is effective in preventing pregnancy from occurring.

  • Over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy
  • 3 years of prevention
  • Less than 0.1% of women experience perforation
  • Does not interfere with the use of tampons or sexual activity

Liletta

Among the newest of the IUDs on the market , Liletta is a safe, effectual option to long-lasting birth control. It has been tested on a wide variety of women and has proven to be up to par with all the popular IUD brands. Similar to Skyla and Mirena, Liletta releases a slow, steady hormone into the uterus called levonorgestrel in order to prevent pregnancy.

  • Proven to last 3 years thus far but, with more testing, that number may increase
  • FDA Approved
  • One of the most affordable options available
  • Releases levonorgestrel hormones

Mirena

Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women recommends this IUD option to women who have had children. Its simple insertion and removal allows women to change their minds and try to become pregnant immediately after removal. Mirena has been FDA approved in the United States since 2000, proving to be highly effective with the use of the levonorgestrel hormone. Our professionals can insert Mirena quickly and easily, with minimal to no discomfort.

  • Over 99% effective
  • Up to 5 years of prevention
  • Great for family planning
  • Treats heavy periods

Side Effects of an IUD

Many women opt to use IUD as opposed to birth control pills as an IUD does not require any form of daily intake or maintenance. IUD users find comfort in knowing that a reliable form of birth control is always in place and cannot be deterred by forgetfulness. All of our IUD products have been tested and approved, causing only minor side effects in the vast majority of women. Some of these side effects may include:

  • Pelvic pain or cramping
  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Swelling or inflammation
  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Weight fluctuation
  • Acne
  • Fatigue

If any of the above symptoms worsen or progress, you should contact our offices immediately.
