Getting a well woman, or gynecological exam is a must for every woman. Though it is somewhat uncomfortable and awkward, these exams serve many purposes to help women live a healthier, happier life. Here at Dr. Susan Fox’s office, we want to build a relationship with our patients to make the well woman exam a holistic, simple experience for everyone.

What is a well woman exam?

The well woman exam consists of a few essential parts. It is an inspection of all of the parts unique to women, such as breasts, vaginal canal, and cervix. There are a few things that will happen during a well woman exam, which will be described in greater detail below.

1: A conversation

Here at Dr. Susan Fox’s gynecology office, we want to build a relationship with you before we begin the well woman exam. During this conversation, we will talk to you about your body and how it functions to understand the baseline that you are coming from and the unique problems you might face. Your doctor will speak with you about your menstrual cycles and the frequency with which they happen and the types of symptoms that you face. This is the perfect time to discuss what period products and medications might be right for you. For example, some supplements can help reduce some of the symptoms of PMS, like bloating, cramping, and acne. During this conversation, you can ask if these supplements might be right for you.

The doctor will also ask you about your sexual activities and history. It is essential, to be honest during this portion of the exam, as it can have a great impact on your gynecological health! Your doctor is not there to judge you, but simply to advise you on how to pursue the lifestyle that is right for you most safely. This is a good time to ask for some non-standard tests, such as STD tests.

If you have a family history of endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or certain cancers, this is the perfect time to let your doctor know. Working with your doctor, you can design the right regimen of checkups and self-checkups to catch any dangerous problems in the earliest stages to keep them from becoming major, life-changing problems.

This conversation is vital to the exam and helps you to build a feeling of trust that will give you a great relationship with your doctor over time.

2: A breast exam

The physical part of your well woman exam in Pinecrest will usually consist of a visual inspection and physical palpations of the gland. The doctor will look for any abnormalities in your areola, nipples, shape, and size of your breasts and glands around the breasts. Next, she will do physical palpations of the gland, checking for abnormal lumps or secretions. Sometimes, signs of cancer or pregnancy can show in the breasts earlier than other symptoms.

3: A vaginal exam

During this exam, the doctor will both visually and physically inspect the vagina. First, she will inspect the outside of the vagina for any abnormal lumps or warts, then insert two fingers inside the vagina and test for any unusual tenderness.

4: A pap smear

During this exam, which should be done every one to two years, depending on the doctor’s recommendation, a small device is inserted into the vagina and expanded so that the doctor can see the walls and cervix of the patient to inspect for cervical cysts or other abnormalities. They also take a small swab of the cervical mucus to test for certain kinds of cervical cancer. The risk of cervical cancer increases over time, so it is essential to get tested every year.

Why do you need a well woman exam in Pinecrest?

Every person who has female reproductive parts should get a well woman exam every year if they are 18 or over, or are sexually active. This exam is vital to keep you healthy and stable in your everyday life. There are certain issues endemic in every age group that requires at least a yearly exam. For example, young people who are more sexually active are more prone to certain STD’s that are often easily treatable. As you get over 30 or 35, issues with fertility and cancers of the breast and cervix become something to watch out for. After 45 or 50, there are a lot of problems that can be caused by menopause that can be mitigated by your doctor.
