Something Seems… Fishy

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis

Taking care of your feminine health can be one of the most challenging parts of being a woman. Our bodies are sometimes unpredictable, and it can be tricky to figure out just what may be causing an imbalance. At Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women, the best advice that we can provide to our patients is to pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you begin to feel strange and experience symptoms that are out of the ordinary, you may be suffering from Bacterial Vaginosis or some other related condition.

You may be wondering: what exactly is Bacterial Vaginosis? This is simply a technical term for a mild infection that can develop in the vagina when there is an imbalance of bacteria. While the name may sound intimidating and cause sudden panic, the condition is rather common and can typically resolve itself within a few days. Antibiotics may be prescribed to someone with a more persistent case. However, as mentioned earlier, you must keep a close watch on your body. If your symptoms persist or worsen after a week, it is best to seek the help of a professional before it has the chance to grow into a more serious issue.

Bacteria cause Bacterial Vaginosis, but it is important to keep in mind that not all bacteria are harmful. There are “good” and “bad” bacteria that exist in the world, but it is only when an imbalance occurs, and one overpowers the other that issues begin to present themselves. In the case of Bacterial Vaginosis, more harmful bacteria is present than good bacteria in the Vagina, causing pH levels to be imbalanced.

How to Treat BV Infection

If you have noticed an increase in vaginal discharge that has a “fishy” scent, this is a tell-tale sign of Bacterial Vaginosis. If your discharge is yellow or grayish in color, it can be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection or STI.

The tricky aspect of this vaginal condition is that many women go about their daily lives and do not ever become aware that they may have Bacterial Vaginosis. This is because the symptoms related to the condition are limited and some women do not even experience them at all. This may sound like a scary prospect, but there are ways to ensure that you are healthy at all times.

Certain factors can make an individual more prone to developing Bacterial Vaginosis. Some of these include smoking, utilizing a douche too often or incorrectly, and having intercourse with either a new partner or having more than one sexual partner.

At Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women, we can never stress the importance of a regular well women’s exam enough. These are routine checkups that most women schedule once a year. Just as most individuals visit their general physicians for a check-up on a yearly basis, your gynecologist visits should not be any different. By coming in for an in-depth checkup regularly, our healthcare professionals can identify and treat vaginal conditions early on before they have the chance to progress into something more serious.
