What Is the LEEP Procedure and How Can It Detect Cancerous Cells?

Electrocautery Loop

Electrocautery Loop

If you are going to have a Pap test or pelvic exam done, you will most likely be required to send in cells to the lab for testing. Or if abnormal cells have been found during one of these exams, you may also be given a LEEP. Short for loop electrosurgical excision procedure, a LEEP removes cells from the cervix and vagina and it is used in the diagnosis and treatment of other conditions. At Dr. Susan Fox’s Center for Women, if you need an Electrocautery Loop, one of our trained experts can provide you with the best treatment.

An Electrocautery Loop uses a wire loop that is heated by an electric current to remove cells and tissue that or abnormal or that will be sent to a lab for testing. It is important that abnormal cells that are not cancerous be removed and tested to see if they have the potential to become cancerous in the future. If you are menstruating, have inflammation in the cervix or pelvic area, it may interfere with LEEP. If you have any questions or concerns before your appointment or procedure, one of our trained physicians will be happy to answer anything you may ask.

An Electrocautery Loop is also beneficial in treating several other conditions.

  • Polyps: Benign growths that are found in the cervix.
  • Genital warts: This may be a sign that you have a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection which is a risk for developing cervical cancer.
  • Diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure: If your mother took DES while pregnant it can increase your chances of cancer in the reproductive system.

LEEP requires no preparation beforehand, which is great for those who have busy schedules. Our trained physicians will let you know what to expect during the procedure so you can always feel confident.
